Independent Living
1 April 2008
At Alternative Futures Group we aim to turn our Vision - of putting people in control of their lives – into reality for the people we work with.
The Government’s Independent Living Strategy (published Feb 2008 and currently out for consultation) sets out in detail the national commitment to ensuring that disabled people have the same choice, freedom, dignity and control over their lives as non-disabled people. Disabled people themselves have stated that independence does not mean living alone, or doing things for themselves – it means:
- having choice and control over the assistance they need to go about their daily life;
- having equal access to housing, transport and mobility, health, employment and education, and training opportunities
These are things that Alternative Futures Group has always believed in, and are the fundamentals on which we both build and deliver our services – through our supported living model, our person-centred approach and our development of brokerage services. A recent article in the Guardian illustrates what personalised services mean in practice for Sean, one of our service users.
